Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation announced its intention to open its European carbon fiber sheet molding compound (SMC) plant in Italy. The new plant is scheduled to start operations in September 2020, adjacent to C.P.C. SRL (headquarters: Modena, Italy, hereinafter referred to as CPC), and Mitsubishi Chemical (MCC) holds a 44% stake in the company.plastic recycling machine

The SMC developed by MCC is an intermediate material for carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and a sheet material in which carbon fibers cut into several centimeters in length are dispersed in a resin. The SMC can be processed into a component in a short time by a stamper, that is, about 2 to 5 minutes. The SMC has high formability for molding a complicated shaped member as compared with a prepreg intermediate material (an unimpregnated carbon fiber fabric impregnated with a resin).

In Japan, MCC produces SMC at its Aichi Plant (Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture). Japanese car manufacturers have adopted SMC for structural components of the interior doors and rear doors of car doors and trunks. Through CPC, MCC developed its mobile business in Europe using CFRP as its main structural material. It has already begun to promote the development of SMC to obtain automotive application certification, mainly from several European luxury car manufacturers, and it is expected to be more widely adopted in the future.
