The deadline for plastic bags proposed in April this year is July 2020. In order to give the distribution company sufficient adjustment time, Socialist Congressman Heloísa Apolónia proposed to extend the deadline to July 2023.

Since fruits and vegetables are packaged in common clear plastic bags, the polymers contained in such plastic bags are extremely hazardous to the environment. By 2023, major distributors must look for alternatives to replace transparent plastic bags, and the idea is that sustainable materials can be used instead of plastic. The “Green Party” proposal applies to “all commercial establishments selling bread, vegetables and fruits”. Ecologists suggest that these stores must look for “alternatives for plastic bags used in bulk bread, fruits and vegetables”. If they do not comply with these regulations, the store will be fined.

Members have suggested that companies now have a lot of time to adapt to the ban, while looking for alternatives, such as packaging in paper bags, or encouraging consumers to carry their own bags every time they shop.
