Mondi Mondi Packaging Group led a project to develop a prototype plastic bag containing at least 20% recycled material. This project was driven by the Alan MacArthur Foundation (EMF) to validate the use of plastic bags from household waste materials. Mondi will now further develop prototypes to ensure that it can be a commercially viable product for its multinational fast-moving consumer goods customers. This will support Mondi’s work as a signatory to the new plastics economic commitment to ensure that at least 25% of all post-consumer waste is included in all flexible plastic packaging permitted by the 2025 Food Contact Regulation.

Georg Kasperkovitz, CEO of Mondi Consumer Packaging, said: “We believe that partnerships are key to finding plastic waste solutions by driving innovation and broad system change across the plastic value chain, with a focus on replacement, reduction and recycling.”

Mondi led the project to verify the availability of two new flexible plastic packaging products: one for post-consumer waste plastics to be produced in a certain proportion for recyclable flexible packaging; and the other for forming filling and sealing for food applications ( FFS) bags replace multi-layer composite packaging to improve recyclability. Mondi said that the joint development agreement is being discussed to enable future research opportunities in this area.
