The Macao SAR Legislative Council held a plenary meeting on August 8th, and passed the “Limiting Plastic Bags” Act. The Act stipulates that except for a few specific commodities and shopping places, plastic bags should not be provided free of charge in all retail activities. The bag is fined 1000 patacas. Specific merchandise and shopping venues under the Act that provide free plastic bags include “unprepacked food or medicine”, “airport passenger boarding or drop-off areas”, and some items sold at airport corridor retail locations.

Luo Liwen, Director of the Transport and Works Department of the Macao SAR Government, who attended the plenary session, said that the “Limiting the Provision of Plastic Bags” bill is only the beginning. After the law comes into force, the relevant situation will be reviewed. It is confident that the scope of plastics will be further expanded in the future, such as restricting plastic straws.

The “Limited Plastic Bags” bill will take effect 90 days after the announcement, and the price of the plastic bags will be determined by the Macao SAR Chief Executive’s instructions.
